ABOUT ME
Spencer Hawkins bridges linguistic divides.
Understanding differences and commonalities between the world’s languages and cultures motivates Spencer Hawkins’s teaching, writing, research, and translation projects. Having taught at schools and universities in the United States, Austria, Germany, and Turkey, Hawkins speaks German, English, Turkish, French, and some Spanish. He currently lives in Berlin, Germany and teaches at Victor-Klemperer-Kolleg.
At the University of Michigan, Hawkins completed his Doctorate in Comparative Literature in 2014. He then taught writing, literature, and German language. Since then, he has actively published on translation, metaphor, and German philosophy. In 2023, he published a book that takes up all of these topics and more. He is also a professional translator focused on translating academic, scientific, and other research texts from German to English. His latest university affiliation was at the Department of Translation, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies at the University of Mainz. He is occasionally for a range of translation, writing, and editorial projects. Please write with specific inquiries.
